Touring the Wild, Wild West

A Vision for the Future and a Family Interlude

We had a good trip over the Teton Pass out of Jackson Hole, checking into a campground in Idaho Falls before sunset and parking our trailer in a pleasant site. As we were setting up camp, we struck up a conversation with a friendly couple in the next site. They had a nice fifth-wheel trailer which they had just bought and were driving home to California.

Since neither Louise nor I had ever been inside a fifth-wheel, we asked if it would be okay to look inside their trailer. (I should mention that Louise has been intrigued for some time by the “tiny home” concept.) They gave us a tour and we were amazed at the amount of room in a fifth-wheel trailer with two or three expansion rooms (called slides, or slide-outs). I said "
Here's your tiny home, Louise. We could live in this!"

When we moved to a remote area in the North Georgia mountains years ago, we bought and refurbished a small (12x40 — that’s 500 square feet!) mobile home and lived in it for several years until we were able to build our dream house. We still think of those years as some of the best of our lives, so we believe we can live very happily in a well-laid-out fifth-wheel trailer with
350--400 square feet of living space. That’s our vision for the future as soon as the house sells.

(It was indeed our dream home and we have lived in and loved it for 26 years. But now it's time to move on.)

The next morning we drove on west across Idaho to the Boise area, where we spent several days with our oldest granddaughter and her husband and three children (a fourth has since been added). We then drove down to the Provo, Utah area for a few days with our oldest grandson, his wife, and little daughter. (A second has since been added.) Our kids and grandkids are all smarter and better-looking than yours, of course.

From Provo we drove to the southeast corner of Utah and Arches National Park. But that’s a story for another day.
