More Fall Color

Ricky's Trees

Planted many years ago by our friend and former neighbor Ricky Smith.

Fall color in the mid-south is generally softer and less vivid than color farther north, but beautiful in its own way. And sometimes, a bit of vivid color will make its presence known.

In North Georgia the colors usually peak in early November. I'm in Knoxville right now, and the colors are farther along, although Knoxville isn't all that far north. This has been a mild autumn so far. What we need is a good frost to make the colors pop out.

Of course, the mountains are first to turn. When we lived in McLemore Cove, between Lookout Mountain and Pigeon Mountain, it was a pleasure each fall to see the mountaintops turn red and gold and then watch the colors work their way down the slopes to the valley.

Photographing fall color is actually pretty easy -- pick a scene you like, point your camera at it, and click the shutter. The most important advice I can give you is: don't overexpose, because overexposure will make the colors look washed out. The photograph just above, for instance wouldn't work at all if it had been overexposed. I'll say it again: the key to successful color photography is exposure.

Some photographers like to set their cameras for vivid color, although I don't do this myself. Others like to use polarizing filters, which I have never found necessary, but to each his own.

Just to finish with something different, here's a fall shot that is definitely not from the mid-south.
